We return to the world of masters, slaves, and the sex trade. The world-building in this series is incredible. If you have a trigger, it is likely in this book, so heed the warnings.
The male main characters continue their cat-and-mouse game in the second book of the series, with danger and suspense ramped up two-fold. More information about “Ick Island” is revealed, along with stories about some of the stolen sex slaves.
However, here is where the vibes stopped vibin’: one crucial piece of the plot puzzle was removed at the end of book one. Now, in book two, without that piece, the suspense has been boiled down to the anticipation of when this woman will be violated. I don’t know if that’s intentional, to allow the reader a deep engagement with the female main character’s precarious situation, or if that’s how the plot is playing out. Whichever it is, I’m not feeling it. It took me a while to get through this one.
Sapphire Scars is next. While I plan to read it because “DNF” is not in my DNA, I am not sure I will get through the entire series. In Pepper I trust because she is an amazing storyteller. This one just doesn’t seem to be my jam.
If you love dark romance with intense world-building and can handle the heavy themes, give it a try and see if it resonates with you. Â
